Would you trade your soul mate for your soul?

A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.

Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?

Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.

When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.

5 out of 5 stars

I have so many feelings and so many thoughts and I know none of them will be portrayed correctly without giving away spoilers. If you haven’t read this book, DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW.

This book was literally everything I had hoped for. I cannot believe I’m done with it because I had been anticipating it for so long, and I LOVED IT. I loved everything about this book. Even if it made me sad or angry, I loved it.

So we start this book with Kit and Jace having a Herondale conversation. I was skeptical about Kit the whole end of Lady Midnight and through the beginning of Lord of Shadows because I knew he wanted to run away. He had already become friends with Ty and Livvy, and if he ran away it would make them so sad. So I was skeptical. I didn’t know how to feel, and he quickly became one of my favorite characters from this book. He was so interesting, and such a nice complement to Ty and Livvy. Ty and Livvy, because they are twins, are similar in many ways. They’ve always been with one another, and they’ve never really gotten the chance to be with kids their own age, so when Kit comes along and starts being their friend and loving them I just couldn’t help but love him.

Mark deciding to go and save Kieran was such a loyal and impressive moment. Kieran was the one that made it so Emma and Julian were whipped in Lady Midnight. Mark can’t just forgive that, but he knows that he can’t let Kieran die no matter how angry he is at him. He loved him while they were in the Hunt, and he needed him so much when they were both isolated in the Hunt. I was very proud of Mark for using his outstanding courage in order to save him from faerie.

So the crew goes into faerie to save Kieran, and then it comes out that Mark and Emma weren’t actually dating *more about this in like two seconds* and then before they find Kieran, Cristina and Mark just go and dance at a faerie revel. Ummmm. Cristina, use better judgement. You know that these things never end well, but it’s fine. Go ahead and dance until you die. It’s all good, no worries.

Mark and Emma. This situation. Okay, not gonna lie, at the end of Lady Midnight I wasn’t hating the idea of it. Lady Midnight ends with Mark asking Emma why they needed to lie about their feelings. The first time I read it I was SO mad because I didn’t think Emma should be with anyone but Julian, but then the second time reading it I realized it was for their own good that they shouldn’t be together. Then at the beginning of this book you find out that Emma and Mark are just faking. Emma lies to Mark and says its to get over Cameron… Yes because you’ve cared about him so much in the past, okay Em. Whatever you say. So Mark didn’t know he was actually the one to hurt Julian. Ugh.

Then Julian and Emma in the cottage. Everyone knew they were going to have sex and they were just going to try and worry about the whole parabatai thing later, but then Emma finally told Jules that the reason she was being so distant was the fact that Jem told her about the parabatai curse. She should have just told him right away so they could just suffer together, but no. But I’m proud of her because she told him. Way to go, Em. But she only told him because they both had near death experiences with the faeries in the group of seven. Mannan (?). Idk but they still fessed up about it anyway.

We got Alec and Magnus throughout it. We got Jace. I thought everything was great until I had like ten pages left and the fricking battle at the Council was still going on. Then Annabel goes crazy and kills Robert. Alec is devastated and he rushes to his father’s side and holds him after he’s dead. The tears almost started. Then Annabel goes even crazier and kills Livvy. She stabs her in the heart, and the way Julian reacts. My heart literally broke. He was whispering to her, and he loves her so much. He raised the Blackthorn children. They are his kids, and he couldn’t protect them. So now he’s going to be so broken in the next book. I’m not going to be able to deal with all of the Blackthorns being so broken because it will hurt my heart more than anything. But Ty and Kit are now destined to be parabatai, but they can’t because Kit loves him. Oh my gosh there is so much angst and I love it.

There was so much more to talk about, but this is already hideously long as it is, so I bid you good day. Thanks for reading the whole thing if you did, I’m impressed.
